Wow it has been just over a year since this post was originally posted and over 2500 power engineers have joined the Power Engineering 101 mailing list.
Once joining the mailing list I send and email saying thank you for joining and ask you to answer a couple questions. One of the questions is:
“What have you have found most difficult throughout your Power Engineering career.”
The overwhelming response to this question has been “currently trying or at some point trying to obtain steam time to complete my certification.”
With these responses I’ve compiled a list of all of the Power Engineers Steam Labs which provide you with the necessary steam time to qualify to write Part B of your provincial examinations.
This list includes includes Power Labs or Steam Labs and not one or two year tech programs. If your looking for distance learning or one and two year tech programs. Here is Your Complete List Of Power Engineering Programs & Power Engineering Distance Learning Courses.

How does one update the link to the Lakeland College website?
It should be: http://www.lakelandcollege.ca/academics/continuing-edu/course/4th-class-steam-lab.aspx
Thank you.
Hey Shelly,
Thanks for the heads up! The Lakeland College link has been updated.
Thank you!
Hi there:
I am currently completing my 3rd Class Power Engineering via correspondents. Is there a Third Class Power Lab similar to the 4th Class 200 hr Power Lab that anyone is aware of.
Thank you in advance.
Nait use to offer it but the industry didn’t want it. They don’t want people with tickets with no real world experience. The market has become overloaded with people due to these power labs.
The “schools” are offering the power labs because they want they $, but people who are buying their tickets are not real PE’s. ABSA is allowing the market to be flooded with people who get their tickets through a power lab.
James:
I believe you may be misinformed, and a bit bitter in making such simple accusations. I teach the Power Engineering lab, and have worked in the field as an operator for over 30+ years. I can assure you throughout my time in the field, that the students are better equipped coming out of the labs then completing work terms. In addition, this has been the direct feedback from various oil, gas and utilities companies we partner with.
Just for your information, the students in the labs start up and shut down boilers on a daily basis for the period of the course. (Also included in the course: starting up pumps, running generators and syncing to a grid, draining steam lines, starting up and shutting down boilers or various makes and models.) This allows the students to walkthrough all steps of a boiler start up and shutdown as a individual or team whereas you may only see a portion of that procedure during a work-term. I do believe the field work terms adds a different value and allows you to see some specific routines (ie taking samples etc) that are missing from the course and builds a relationship with the company for future employment (if you can secure one in this depressed economy). However, during a work term at a facility, I can guarantee the students coming out of the lab know a tremendous amount more than someone coming out of their work term. In addition, someone on work-terms would only see a couple boiler shutdowns in which you may be involved in only a small piece of the start up and shutdown if any at all.
Please educated yourself James, before making simple misinformed comments.
Hi
In 2020
I just want to know is there any lab where one can get steam time for the 3rd class?
I’d also like to know the answer to this question.
