As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2023-2024, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,954 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 8 hours per day – 12 month position

Building Technnician

 

Responsibilities:

Inspect, service and repair building technical equipment and systems;
Maintain and repair technical equipment and systems, such as alarms, sprinklers, etc.;
Inspect and test operation of equipment and systems in accordance with regulations;
Complete work orders, test and maintenance reports;
Calibrate components and instruments according to manufacturers’ specifications;
Repair and adjust system components, such as sensors, etc.;
Consult manufacturers’ manuals to determine tests and maintenance procedures;
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance work and complete test and maintenance reports;
Other related duties including addtional maintenance, groundskeeping or custodial as required.

 

Qualifications:
Completion of a recognized community college trades training program, and/or enrollment in a building trade apprenticeship program, or fourth class power engineer certificate;
Preference given to demonstrated experience working in a building maintenance environment;
Commercial cleaning experience and training;
Previously demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
Good technology and organizational skills to ensure accurate records of preventative maintenance work orders, purchase orders, employee time sheets, inventory, snow removal logs, security logs, etc.;
Preference given for those having experience in supervising facilities staff and/or building trades in a working environment;
Ability to ensure that all aspects of building maintenance and usage of the school are satisfied and emergencies are dealt with as they arise;
Excellent knowledge of OHS procedures and regulations;
Current CPR and First Aid certification or willing to obtain;
Current WHMIS certification or willing to obtain.
