Summary:

The Shift Supervisor coordinates and oversees the shift activities of the Operations Department at the Durham York Energy Facility. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this role involves supervising and coordinating maintenance activities either personally or through subordinates.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

– Manage Control Room Operators, Auxiliary Operators, Crane Equipment Operators, and Utility Operators in the Operations Department.

– Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the shift.

– Conduct supervisory duties in alignment with organizational policies and applicable laws.

– Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

– Ensure all essential duties are performed satisfactorily.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

– Foster an environment of Safety, Environmental Stewardship, and commitment to excellence.

– Mentor and coach the operations team to ensure optimal operation of the EfW Facility.

– Review, prioritize, and direct daily work activities for the department.

– Supervise the Control Room Operator, Auxiliary Operators, Crane Equipment Operators, and Utility Operators to ensure continuous service and worker safety.

– Enforce safety policies and procedures for the Operations Department and support teams.

– Monitor production and maintenance activities, assist in planning scheduled outage work, and oversee the scheduling and timely completion of operating duties.

– Develop operating procedures and instructions and assist in evaluating and recommending plant improvements.

– Review and verify all departmental documents and records, including CEMs data.

– Collaborate with other departments to resolve interrelated administrative, organizational, and technical issues.

– Comply with all organizational Policies and Procedures.

– Be aware of roles and responsibilities within the ISO program, including the Environmental Policy, environmental impacts of activities, and reporting environmental incidents immediately.

 

Requirements(Education, Skills, Certificates, Licenses, Experience):

– Broad background in plant operations, with at least five (5) years of hands-on or supervisory experience in power plant machinery.

– 2nd Class Inter-Provincial Power Engineers Certification is required; a general supervisory background in an electrical generating facility is preferred.

– General knowledge and/or experience in industrial safety or equivalent combination of education and experience.

– Experience in a Solid Fuel facility is highly desirable.

– Proficiency with DCS and CEMs operations is required; prior commissioning experience is an asset.

 

Reasoning Ability:

– Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.

– Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:

– Ability to take appropriate action on their own initiative to prevent injury to personnel, environmental noncompliance, and equipment damage during emergencies or unusual situations.

– Ability to motivate employees, maintain high morale, and work well with others.

– Proficiency with office computer systems, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

 

Physical Demands:

– Ability to work shift work in 24hr/7days a week operation, with schedules potentially including 12 Hr. Days/Nights or 3X8 Hr. Days, Afternoon, or Nights, depending on business needs.

– Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

– Occasionally lift and/or move between 10 and 50 pounds.

– Ability to access and make plant tours and/or inspections on a routine basis.

– Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

– Frequent confined space entries during outages in boilers, steam drum, and APC for inspections, TSSA regulatory compliance, and maintenance activities.

 

Language Skills:

– Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

– Ability to write comprehensive logs, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

– Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.

 

Mathematical Skills:

– Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

– Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Work Environment:

– Periodically enter and inspect various plant areas with rotating machinery; occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, confined spaces, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

– Work in outside weather conditions; extreme heat may be a factor.

– The noise level usually requires hearing protection.
