About the Opportunity

Libertyeco Inc. is hiring Building Operators / Facilities Maintenance Technicians to operate and maintain school facilities across Alberta.

We are looking for hands-on, safety-minded individuals who enjoy troubleshooting, understand mechanical systems, take pride in their work, and are comfortable taking ownership of building operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Building Operator, a 5th Class Power Engineer looking to grow, or a 4th Class Power Engineer seeking a stable facilities career with a growing Alberta company.

As a Building Operator, you will help keep our school facilities safe, comfortable, efficient, and reliable.

Your responsibilities will include:

Conduct regular building and mechanical-room inspections
Operate boilers and pressure equipment within the limits of your certification
Monitor boiler temperatures, pressures, flow, and operating performance
Inspect and maintain pumps, motors, valves, expansion tanks, and heat exchangers
Monitor hydronic and glycol heating systems
Operate and monitor HVAC equipment
Monitor and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Review BAS alarms, schedules, temperatures, humidity, and equipment status
Investigate equipment alarms and identify the underlying cause
Troubleshoot sensors, actuators, valves, pumps, controls, and related equipment
Perform preventative maintenance and routine equipment servicing
Respond to heating, cooling, plumbing, lighting, and building comfort concerns
Identify developing equipment issues before they become major repairs
Perform minor mechanical and building repairs within your qualifications
Assist electricians, plumbers, gasfitters, HVAC technicians, and controls technicians
Coordinate and monitor specialized contractors when required
Assist with seasonal equipment start-up and shutdown
Complete electronic work orders, inspections, and maintenance records
Verify contractor work
Maintain clean, organized, and professional mechanical rooms
Communicate professionally with school staff, management, contractors, and service providers
Participate in an after-hours/on-call rotation as required
Equipment & Systems

Our facilities include a wide range of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and building systems, including:

Boilers and pressure equipment
Hydronic and glycol heating systems
Pumps and circulating systems
Plate heat exchangers
Expansion tanks
Domestic hot-water systems
Air handling units
Rooftop HVAC equipment
Exhaust and ventilation systems
Heating and cooling coils
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Motors, valves, dampers, and actuators
Building Automation Systems (BAS/DDC)
Honeywell and similar BAS platforms
BACnet controls
Plumbing systems
Electrical and lighting systems
Water-treatment and filtration equipment
Fire and life-safety systems within the operator’s scope
General building systems
Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

Valid Alberta 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate
Practical knowledge of building mechanical systems
Experience with boilers and HVAC equipment
Basic knowledge of Building Automation Systems
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
Ability to use computers, tablets, email, and electronic work-order systems
Ability to read equipment manuals and technical information
Strong safety awareness
Good written and verbal communication skills
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean driving record
Ability to travel between assigned facilities as required
Ability to participate in an after-hours/on-call rotation
Because this position involves working in school facilities, successful candidates must provide satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

The following experience or qualifications would be considered an asset:

Alberta 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate
Previous Building Operator experience
School, hospital, institutional, or commercial facility experience
HVAC experience
Hydronic heating experience
Boiler troubleshooting experience
Building Automation System experience
Honeywell BAS/EBI experience
Niagara or BACnet experience
Gasfitter experience
Plumbing or pipefitting experience
Electrical experience
VFD and motor troubleshooting experience
Water-treatment experience
Fire and life-safety knowledge
CMMS/work-order system experience
Journeyperson or apprentice trade experience
