Alberta Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a 4th Class Power Engineer to work out of our mill site near the Athabasca, AB area. The successful candidate is responsible for the safe operation of the Chemical Recovery and Utility Plant. This role is also responsible for operating and maintaining equipment and machinery such as turbines, boilers, generators, stationary engines, and auxiliary equipment to generate electrical power, and to provide heat, light, refrigeration and other utility services for all Al-Pac buildings, equipment and work sites. This role also operates a recovery boiler, lime kiln, slaker, and causticizers that support the chemical recovery operations.

Role Responsibilities

Operate complex equipment and machines, adjusting diverse variables to achieve the best possible outcomes in terms of quality and productivity.
Operate and service building/plant (e.g., boilers, water softeners, chillers, HVAC, automation systems, fire systems, call systems, emergency power) within code requirements.
Monitor and inspect process equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, meters and other instruments to measure temperature, pressure and fuel flow and detect leaks or other equipment malfunctions to make sure plant equipment is operating at maximum efficiency.
Perform daily boiler chemical tests to calculate impurities, adding chemicals as necessary.
Complete daily checks on field equipment as part of operator basic care program.
Maintains and repairs boilers and ventilation units (e.g., shutdown, boiler inspection, replace parts).
Maintains and services hot water systems (e.g., pumps, converters, heat reclamation system, piping)
Monitor and maintain the pneumatic control system.
Perform preventative maintenance tasks on all plant/energy centre equipment and systems, as per the preventative maintenance program.
Identify any maintenance requirements and put in malfunction reports as required.
Troubleshoot basic technical or operational problems by applying previously defined solutions.
Collect samples as required to test quality of liquor and verify online instrumentation.
Other

General physical activities include climbing, lifting, handling materials, unplugging equipment, chemical lines or equipment, turning valves, using wash up hoses and small tools.
These activities include working in various conditions.
Role Requirements

Must have a high school diploma or equivalency.
Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates who reside in or near Al-Pac’s Forest Management Agreement (FMA) area.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to be a critical thinker, analyzing situations and using logic to address issues.
Excellent problem-solving skills and basic knowledge of root cause analysis.
Good problem-solving skills and is mechanically incline.
Capable of reading and understanding complex instructions.
Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).
